Stained Glass Coneflowers

Pictured is a coneflower pin made of stained glass. Inspired by nature, the wearable art is embellished with jewels and sometimes rhinestone too.

Designed by local artist Maureen R. Sorensen of MY STARS and more ..., each creation is one of kind and free form.

"These are the same technique as my stars, but if you notice they are star tips turned backwards. They've become flowers, " said Sorensen.

The composition includes: art glass, copper foil, copper wire, and lead-free solder.

Find a collection of colorful summer coneflowers in our shop at 413 Division St in downtown Northfield.

"Casual Classes" in our STUDIO.

We know the summer schedule is busy for everyone, at Eclectic Goat and Glass Garden we have set up a "Casual Class" format. We will schedule a class / or activity for a minimum of 3 persons. The time frame is 1.5 - 2 hours and the date and time is up to you. The activity or class will be a beginner to intermediate level so all can partake in the activity. The instructor will get everyone acquainted with the project and leave the group to chat and enjoy the activity among themselves. When a question occurs the instructor will be on hand to assist everyone. This semi attendance allows us to lower the teaching fee while the instructor is free to attend to other shop duties.
So, why schedule a "Casual Class"?
1. Fees are less than a formal structured class.
2. It is a great way to share time with visiting friends and family while having fun with a project.
3. Small Groups can take advantage of a project time.
4. A time filler for kids and friends.

Examples of past Casual Classes we've hosted:
1. Daddy and Daughters made bracelets for Mom - Mother's Day Project
2. Girl Scouts did a Memory Wire and stranding project.
3. Gramma and Grand Daughters learned Kumihimo (Japanese Braiding) together.
4. Kids and visiting cousins did, Doodle your day away project.
5. Girlfriends do a mixed media assembly together with found objects.

It's a creative and casual atmosphere for FUN!

Kit of the Month - July 2013

One of the things we've added this past spring was the "Kit of the Month" class. The class cost is the teaching fee and we discount the kits 50% when you take the class.
The Kit of the Month Class is "Blooming Crystal", students will be able to choose from these beautiful colors.

Personalized Handtooled Pendants

-->
A note from Suzanne Klumb, co-owner of the Eclectic Goat, on her custom handtooled charms.

I love handmade and enjoy the creative process - moving from concept to a finished piece. My work appeals to people who want something different with some sort of meaning attached.

A lot of my work is made from soft precious metal clay (PMC). With this material I can create very individual personalized pieces. Fingerprints can be pressed into the clay, letters and words can stamped or engraved, shapes can be sculpted and stones set. Many choices are available in working with this material for customers. (Prices are higher than costume jewelry but far less than at a lapidary – the silversmith or goldsmith level.)

It’s the perfect gift for: Valentine’s Day, a wedding parties, bridal and engagement gifts, celebration of a new life or a passing, graduation or confirmation, Mother’s and Father’s Day, a best friend or BFF charm. Lots of options are available! Stop in or call if you have an idea!

1/2" Mini Handtooled Silver Heart with inner puffed heart /dangle fresh water pearl on plated silver ball chain. $45.00 (16")
(A personalized initial can be stamped on the back. Size doesn't allow anymore than 1 letter.)

1" Lovebirds Handtooled Silver Pendant is oxidized and large enough to stamp initials on the back of the pendant to personalize it. It hangs from a plated silver oxidized chain 18". $60

Special orders require a phone call to Suz at the Eclectic Goat / Glass Garden Beads Shop. 507-645-0301. Usually once the details are decided the order is completed within 7 to 10 days. (Initials can be personalized on the back of the charm at time of pick up.)

Hand Tooled Silver is a hands-on sculpting process where the Silver material is a Precious Metal Clay. Once the sculpting is completed the next step is the drying, tooling and sanding. The piece goes into a kiln at a high temperature firing for 30 minutes to 2 hours. After the cooling process the piece is removed as a hardened fine silver element, which an artist can solder, polish, oxidize, stamp or hammer.

Once the finish is completed on the silver element it goes to the final assembling process where it is applied to a bracelet a necklace a broach or just a small charm or sculpture.

Doodle Artist Goes National

Shona Brooks, local artist and co-owner of the Eclectic Goat, was recently awarded a contract with MindWare®, a national game and toy company for kids, for the production of two illustrated books based on her line of Doodle your day away. The illustrations are intended as artwork to be added to by coloring with crayons, colored pencils or markers. The books, titled Fantastical Style Animals and Fantastical Style Flowers, will hold over twenty pages of designs and will be available for purchase on the company’s website mindware.com in the fall of 2013.

“I’m grateful to have this opportunity,” said Brooks. "The goal is to aspire others to create their own art."

The doodles are ornate hand drawings on various subjects in bold outlines detailed with patterns and texture for the purpose of creating your own impact with color.

“I work in pen only; the creations just happen – it’s freehand and freeform,” said Brooks. Developing a page can take just a few hours but sometimes it takes a couple of days, depending on the design. The whole idea is for it to be a leisure-time activity that’s relaxing and fun to do.

“We are all artists whether we are five or eighty-five,” explained Brooks, who thinks anyone can pick this up and create something beautiful.

“I also like this media as an art therapy to help others explore their creative side and build self confidence to move into other artistic outlets,” said Brooks.

Brooks' products are sold to the healthcare market at gift shops such as United Hospital in St. Paul, the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, in Minneapolis and the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, of which Brooks will be a guest artist in March and participate in a year-long artist’s program for teaching doodling classes to patients.

“They are very simplistic, but after you add your own color and personalize it, they can become masterpieces that will likely be put on your refrigerator door!” Brooks said with a smile.

“I, myself, didn’t believe I could be an artist,” commented Brooks, “but this venture has been validating for me.”

This follows suit with the businesses Brooks co-owns with Suzanne Klumb at 413 Division Street in Northfield — the Eclectic Goat and Glass Garden Beads — and their belief in promoting local artists’ wares. “We want people to succeed in the art of creating and have fun while they are doing it.”
